One Night Stand Guide: Make It Good for Both of You

Before, during and after: how to find someone, say what you want and enjoy the morning.

The short answer

A one night stand is a sexual encounter meant to happen once, with no plan for more. To make it good for both of you, say what you each want before you meet, agree your limits, keep your own way home, check in as you go and send one kind text afterwards. Then get a sexual health check-up.

Before you meet

Before: four things that set the night up

Most of what makes a one night stand good is settled before anyone orders a drink. Four jobs, in this order.

  1. Check it is your idea

Go because you want to, not because you are lonely, restless or being nudged by a friend. The studies further down found worse outcomes when people hooked up under pressure or to fix a bad mood, and no such link when they did it by choice.

  2. Find someone who wants the same thing

Say “casual” on your profile and in your first messages. On Naughty Singles you choose a relationship type and your daily match suggestions weigh it, with age range and distance. The guide to how to find a hookup covers the asking, and the singles near me page shows how distance works.

  3. Say the rules before you meet

By message, settle the basics: one night, who texts whom afterwards, condoms, and whether photos are off the table. Planned Parenthood advises talking over desires, limits and deal-breakers upfront. Anyone who sighs at that list has saved you an evening.

  4. Make the first meeting public

RAINN’s advice is to begin somewhere busy and well lit and to hold off on private places until some trust is built. For a one night stand that means the first drink is public and going on somewhere private is a second yes, given face to face. Tell a friend who, where and when you will be back, and keep your own way home.

While you are together

During: clear, kind and protected

  1. Ask, then listen to the answer

RAINN calls consent an ongoing conversation: yes to one thing is not yes to everything, and anyone can change their mind mid-evening. Planned Parenthood suggests plain questions such as “Should I keep going?” followed by listening to the words and the body language. Silence is not a yes.

  2. Keep your head clear

A drink to settle the nerves is one thing. RAINN says someone who is intoxicated cannot give consent, and the Crown Prosecution Service in England and Wales says a very drunk person may lack the capacity to agree. Fielder and Carey (2010, Archives of Sexual Behavior) followed 140 first-semester college students and found that peak drunkenness predicted who hooked up. If either of you cannot decide clearly, call it a night and try another.

  3. Treat protection as a given

The CDC says latex condoms reduce the risk of infection and pregnancy without offering absolute protection, so put on a fresh one each time and keep it on throughout. Oil-based lubricants can weaken latex, so choose water-based. If one breaks, stop, change it and read the afterwards section below.

  4. Pay attention to each other

Armstrong, England and Fogarty (2012, American Sociological Review) surveyed undergraduates at 21 US colleges and interviewed 85 more. Women reported more pleasure and satisfaction in relationships than in hookups, partly because of what partners did and how well they knew each other. Ask what they like, take turns and be generous. A stranger is still owed a good night.

The evidence

What studies say about the morning after

Most of this research asks students, or online volunteers, to look back on a hookup. Read it as a guide to what tends to matter, not a forecast of your night.

Four studies, read from their published abstracts on 16 October 2026.
StudyWho was askedWhat it found
Campbell, Human Nature, 20081,743 people who had had a one night standWomen reported more negative and fewer positive “morning after” feelings than men, and more regret about feeling “used”.
Eshbaugh and Gute, Journal of Social Psychology, 2008152 sexually active college womenRegret went with sex with someone once and only once, and with someone known for under 24 hours.
Vrangalova, Archives of Sexual Behavior, 2015528 undergraduates, surveyed twice in a yearHookups made under pressure went with lower self-esteem and more anxiety and depression. Hookups made by choice showed no such link.
McKeen, Anderson and Mitchell, Sexuality & Culture, 2022701 adults aged 18 to 82, onlineWomen reported more negative outcomes on average, and going in to lift a bad mood predicted a worse one.

Three habits stand out: do it for your own reasons, make sure the other person feels like a person and not a stop on the way, and give the morning some room. None of it predicts how your night will go. It does explain the steps above.

The day after

Afterwards: the morning, the text, the testing

  • The morning

Mixed feelings are normal, and Campbell’s respondents rated warm and uneasy ones alike. Leave when you said you would and be kind on the way out. Planned Parenthood suggests reflecting on how an experience made you feel, and rethinking your approach if hookups leave you low.

  • The text

A text takes ten seconds. Silence costs the other person a morning of wondering. Healthline’s medically reviewed casual dating guide says ghosting causes stress and confusion, and that a brief, honest message beats nothing. Say thanks, say whether you would like to meet again, then stop.

  • The testing

STIs often have no symptoms, the CDC says, so a test is the only way to know. The NHS says an infection can take up to seven weeks to show on a test, so ask a clinic when to come in. In England you need no GP referral and can leave your real name out.

Ask a professional about the health side. This is general information from public health bodies, not advice for you. A doctor or sexual health clinic can say which tests you need and when, and the CDC’s GetTested locator and the NHS clinic finder show where to go.

One night stand questions, answered

How do I find a one night stand?

Say you want something casual on your profile, chat until you are sure you both mean the same thing, then meet somewhere public. VIP members on Naughty Singles can also filter by city, distance and what someone is open to. The hookup app page shows how to use the site from your phone.

Should I text after a one night stand?

Keep to whatever you agreed beforehand. If you agreed nothing, a short kind message is the safer bet: thank them, say whether you would like to see them again and leave it there. The casual dating rules cover texting etiquette in more detail.

What if a condom breaks?

Contact a clinic, pharmacist or doctor the same day. The NHS says emergency contraception works better the sooner it is used and must be taken within 3 to 5 days, and the CDC says HIV preventive medicine called PEP must start within 72 hours. Neither replaces a later STI test.

What if I want to see them again?

Say so, kindly and early. Healthline’s casual dating guide advises telling the truth when feelings shift, even if the other person may not share them, and taking a no with the same respect you would want. Our guide to what casual dating is explains the difference.
