England

Scotland
Edinburgh is the capital, and Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee are cities too. Scotland has its own parliament, government and legal system.
Wales
Cardiff is the capital. Wales has its own parliament and government, and shares a legal jurisdiction with England.
Northern Ireland
Belfast is the capital. Northern Ireland has its own government and parliament, and a legal jurisdiction of its own.

Age checks
Why adult sites ask UK visitors to prove their age
Nothing personal. It is the Online Safety Act at work, as Ofcom describes it.
Ofcom regulates online services under the Online Safety Act 2023. The Act requires services that allow pornography to use “highly effective” age assurance, so children are not normally able to encounter it. For publishers of pornography, those duties came into force in January 2025.
Ofcom’s list of methods that can be highly effective:
- Open banking
- Photo ID matching
- Facial age estimation
- Mobile network operator checks
- Credit card checks
- Digital identity services
- Email-based age estimation
A tick-box saying you are over 18 does not count, because Ofcom says self-declaration of age is not highly effective. Adults can still reach legal adult material, though Ofcom says they “will start to notice changes in how they access certain online services”.

What to do about a romance scam
City of London Police recorded 10,784 romance fraud reports in 2025, up 29 per cent on 2024. If one finds you, work through four moves.

Send nothing
Report Fraud says never send money, cryptocurrency or gift cards to anyone you have not met face to face. Dodging a meeting or a live video call is a warning sign.

Tell your bank
If you have already paid, tell your bank straight away. Report Fraud says a victim is not to blame, so there is no shame in speaking up.

Report the profile
Block and report them on the site. Report Fraud also suggests checking their pictures with a reverse image search.

Report Fraud, run by City of London Police, serves England, Wales and Northern Ireland and replaced Action Fraud on 4 December 2025. In Scotland, tell Police Scotland, online, by phone or in person.

Four nations, four places to get tested
The NHS says many STIs have no symptoms, and the only way to know is to get tested. Each nation runs its own pages.
- England. NHS sexual health clinics charge nothing and are open to everyone, whatever their age, gender, ethnicity or sexuality. Visits are confidential, and you do not usually need a referral, but contact the clinic first.
- Scotland. NHS inform covers contraception, STIs, healthy relationships and the sexual health services in Scotland.
- Wales. NHS 111 Wales lists the sexual health clinics run by the local health boards.
- Northern Ireland. nidirect says testing carries no charge and is straightforward and confidential, at your nearest GUM clinic and some GP surgeries.

Will I be asked to prove my age online in the UK?
