What Is Casual Dating? Fun, Flirty and On Your Terms
The plain meaning, the words people use, who it suits and what the research says.
Casual dating means seeing someone for the fun of it, without a promise of a future together. There are usually real dates, regular messages and some chemistry, but no label and often no exclusivity. Sex may or may not be part of it, so what you both want has to be said out loud.
The words people use
What do all the casual dating words mean?
Casual dating shares a postcode with a lot of other words, and people use them as if everyone had agreed the definitions. Nobody has. Here is what the dictionaries and a medically reviewed health guide say.
- Casual dating
- Dating for fun rather than commitment. Healthline’s medically reviewed guide says it usually means real dates, regular texts or calls and firm plans, often with no labels and no exclusivity.
- Hookup
- “A casual sexual encounter,” in Merriam-Webster’s words. Dictionary.com adds that there is no long-term commitment attached.
- One-night stand
- A sexual encounter limited to a single occasion, says Merriam-Webster. Cambridge puts it as a sexual relationship that lasts for only one night.
- No strings attached
- Cambridge Dictionary’s dating sense: a romantic or sexual relationship where nobody expects it to be permanent or expects to be the other person’s only partner. NSA is the shorthand.
- Situationship
- Closer than friends, short of a couple, and never quite labelled. Our situationship guide covers the signs.
- Friends with benefits
- Merriam-Webster: “a friend with whom one has casual sexual relations without commitments.”
What suits whom
Is casual dating right for you?
Less a question of age than of how you feel when plans stay loose.
It tends to suit you if you
- are easing back into dating and want to start gently;
- are still working out what you like, and what you do not;
- enjoy the spark of attraction and a good evening out without pressure to make it official.
It may not suit you if you
- tend to fall quickly once you are involved;
- want someone who is willing to picture a future with you;
- need a clearly labelled relationship;
- prefer to build a deep emotional bond first.
Both lists draw on Healthline’s guide, which is gentle about the second one: if casual dating leaves you cold, it says, that is reason enough to skip it.
Research points the same way. In a 2014 study in Social Psychological and Personality Science, Vrangalova and Ong followed single undergraduates with weekly diaries. Students who were more open to casual sex reported higher well-being after having it than after not having it, and students who were less open showed no such difference. These were college students, so read it as a pointer for adults in their forties rather than a verdict.
What people say they want
How many people actually want casual dating?
The Pew Research Center put questions about online dating to 6,034 US adults in July 2022. Of the people who had spent time on a dating site or app over the previous twelve months, this many called each reason a major one.
| A major reason for using one | Share of users |
|---|---|
| To meet a long-term partner | 44% |
| To date casually | 40% |
| To have casual sex | 24% |
| To make new friends | 22% |
Dating casually came second, just behind finding a long-term partner, among the four reasons Pew asked about. It is not only a young person’s game either. In a separate Pew report on Americans aged 50 and over who had dated online in the past year, 36% named dating casually as a major reason, and Pew noted that younger users were just as likely to say so.
Casual or serious?
Where casual dating ends and a relationship begins
There is no official border, and Healthline admits the line between casual and serious is more of a smudge. Its guide says a serious relationship usually brings strong attachment, labels such as partner or boyfriend, firm commitment and some talk of a future together. Casual dating keeps the dates and the spark and leaves those out.
The test is a conversation, not a milestone. Introduced them to your family? Booked a weekend away? Either of you may feel you have drifted past casual, and the only way to find out is to ask. The casual dating rules show how to ask without making it awkward.

Casual dating questions, answered
What is casual dating in simple terms?
Casual dating is seeing someone because you enjoy their company, with no promise of a future together. It usually involves real dates and regular messages but no relationship label, and often no exclusivity. Sex can be part of it or not, which is why agreeing what you both want matters.
Can you see other people while casually dating?
Often, but do not assume. Healthline’s medically reviewed guide says casual dating is often but not always nonexclusive, and that people tend to treat seeing others as fine unless exclusivity has been discussed. It recommends having that conversation at some point so you are both on the same page.
Is casual dating the same as a hookup?
No. A hookup is usually a sexual encounter without commitment, while casual dating tends to involve dates, regular contact and firm plans even when the labels stay loose. One can slide into the other, so check which one the other person has in mind.
Is casual dating bad for your mental health?
Not by itself, the research on young adults suggests. Eisenberg and colleagues (Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, 2009) found no link between a casual partner and worse well-being among 1,311 sexually active young adults. Vrangalova (Archives of Sexual Behavior, 2015) found that hooking up under pressure was linked to lower self-esteem, and hooking up by choice was not.
Is casual dating only for young people?
No. A 2023 Pew Research Center report on Americans aged 50 and over who had dated online in the past year found that 36% named dating casually as a major reason. Naughty Singles is for adults 18 and over, and about six in ten members are between 35 and 54.
