Pick your patch
Which part of Dallas suits a first drink?
Dallas is big and spread out, and the district you choose says something before you do. These are the ones worth knowing.
- Deep Ellum
- Uptown
- Bishop Arts District
- Lower Greenville
- Knox/Henderson
- Oak Lawn
- Dallas Arts District
- Trinity Groves
Deep Ellum is the loud one. Visit Dallas calls it the nightlife hotspot for live music, cool bars and casual eateries, and its jazz and blues roots go back to the 1920s and 1930s. Uptown is denser and a touch dressier, with nightlife strips, the Katy Trail alongside and a heritage trolley down to downtown.
Bishop Arts, over in Oak Cliff, goes for independent boutiques, coffee shops, galleries and bars. Lower Greenville and Knox/Henderson suit a long dinner that turns into cocktails. Oak Lawn, along Cedar Springs Road, is what Wikipedia calls the epicentre of gay and lesbian culture across the metroplex.

Texas weather
Early evening is Dallas at its kindest
Plan around the sun and the rest falls into place.
Dallas summers are not subtle. Wikipedia’s climate notes say days above 100 F (38 C) turn up at least several times every summer, with typical July and August highs around 96 F. A first drink at six beats one at two, and nobody arrives wilting.
Winters are mild, though freezing rain now and then wrecks travel plans, so keep a plan B for a January date.
The city’s clock helps too. Klyde Warren Park closes at 11 PM and DART winds down around midnight, so an early start lets you leave while the evening is still going well.
Daylight and early evening
Three easy places for a first hello
Klyde Warren Park
A deck park built over the Woodall Rodgers Freeway, open 6 AM to 11 PM daily. Its own FAQ says public safety officers watch it day and night and that it is well lit at all times.
White Rock Lake
A reservoir finished in 1911, ringed by a 9.33-mile path for walking, running and cycling, with the Dallas Arboretum next door. Walk, talk and turn back whenever you like.
The Katy Trail
A 3.5-mile rail trail from Victory Park through Uptown to Mockingbird Station, with a wide concrete path and a softer track beside it. Finish with a drink in Uptown.
After dark
Know how you are getting home before you order
- DART winds down around midnight. The agency says its buses and trains run daily from about 5 a.m. to midnight, with rail every 30 minutes late at night. Those hours leave out the small hours, so find your last train in advance.
- Ride-share must be booked. The Texas licensing regulator says you cannot hail a ride-share driver on the street. Before you get in, the app has to show the driver’s photo and first name and the car’s make, model and plate.
- Drivers are screened. Companies must run criminal history and driving history checks when they hire a driver and again every year, plus annual sex offender checks.
Look after each other. Dallas County Health and Human Services runs a Sexual Health Clinic for HIV and STI testing and treatment. The CDC’s GetTested locator finds testing near you, and the CDC says many clinics offer it confidentially at low or no cost. A doctor or clinic can tell you what suits you.
Only in Dallas
Near you can mean Plano, Irving or Fort Worth

DART serves a dozen cities, from Addison and Carrollton to Rowlett and University Park, and the Trinity Railway Express joins downtown Dallas to downtown Fort Worth over 34 miles. Every autumn the State Fair of Texas fills Fair Park for 24 days from the last Friday of September.
