- Historic streets from the late 1800s, northwest of Downtown, with boutiques, restaurants and big old trees.

- Shops, restaurants and pubs, half a mile west of the centre of Rice University’s campus.
- Museum District
- Hermann Park, the zoo and, by Visit Houston’s count, 19 museums, with four METRORail stops. Plenty to talk about.

METRO’s hours put the last trains after midnight, and there’s no all-night rail. In Texas a ride-share must be booked through its app, which shows your driver’s photo and first name and the car’s licence plate before you get in. Tell a friend your plans.

Average highs sit around 63 F (17 C), mild enough for an evening stroll. The Chevron Houston Marathon is a January fixture.

About 50 inches of rain falls in a year, and heavy downpours can flood streets. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so check the forecast before heading outdoors.
